Twin’s 32-year search for abducted sister

VERONISHA Adams is using her face to find her identical twin, Veronique Adams, who vanished on March 6, 1989.

Veronique was kidnapped nearly 32 years ago when she was 11 months old while in the care of her nanny in Extension 9, Eldorado Park in Gauteng.

A week ago, Missing Children South Africa’s Facebook page posted the flyer of the missing twin which reached more than 7 000 people and achieved 4 000 shares.

The Adams family has received a few responses, but say nothing concrete enough to conduct a DNA test or contact the police to assist.

A woman from Durban has since reached out to the family, in search of her birth parents and images of her have since been shared with the twins’ mother, Junice Adams, 71.

Three years ago, the family carried out DNA testing from another woman who they believed could be Veronique. The test was negative.

Veronisha’s face was placed on the flyers alongside the picture of her missing twin, repeating an attempt they made when the two were 24, in 2013.

Veronisha, who now lives in Johannesburg, had been in the care of her nanny named “Beauty”, which the family believes was an alias.

The nanny had recently been employed and was to provide personal information, like her identity document and address, but never did.

Veronisha this week related the story her mother and uncle had told her of the day of the disappearance.

“We were in the care of the nanny that day, including my sister who was five years old. My uncle lived around the corner and he would always visit us during the day.”

When he arrived, he saw Veronique and Beauty were gone and called their mother.

At the time the family tried to report the disappearance, police told them they had to wait 24 hours.

An identikit of Beauty was drawn up and circulated.

Veronisha said the missing poster was updated this year because they are in their thirties.

“My mother was always the one using my picture for the poster,” she said.

The twins’ mother, Junice, said she still believes police could have found her child if they had not waited 24 hours.

“School children saw the nanny with the baby that day,” said Junice.

Beauty had said her identity papers were with her previous employers in Durban and that she would fetch them over the Easter Holidays.

“I know she would have given my child a different name.”

Missing Children SA national coordinator Bianca van Aswegen said there were no new leads in the case.
