73 deaths in Africa
TWELVE African countries have so far reported 1782 cases of monkeypox, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said. Of these, 1 678 were suspected cases, while 104 were confirmed, said acting director Ahmed Ogwell.
Benin, Morocco and South Africa were non-endemic AU members reporting confirmed cases. Ogwell said 73 people had died, bringing the case fatality rate to 4.1%. Ethiopia, Guinea, Liberia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Uganda, all with no previous incidents, also reported suspected cases.
