SHAKY START FOR SCHOOLS

FORMER Kannaland mayor Jeffrey Donson, who was convicted of statutory rape years ago, has been ousted from his position after the majority of councillors voted against him in the motion of no confidence this week. Donson and his deputy, Werner Meshoe, refused to step down after it emerged they had criminal convictions. Donson, the leader of the Independent Civic Organisation of SA (Icosa), was convicted of raping a 15-yearold girl in 2008. He appealed against the matter and was handed a suspended sentence. The ANC pulled out of a coalition deal with Icosa over this. | IOL

A BITTER start to the 2022 academic year greeted the Eastern Cape department of education as it faces a plethora of unresolved issues – from recent floods to a human rights violation complaint lodged against them at the Human Rights Commission. Over 95 schools were damaged in the province following downpours that have hit many parts of the region. The department said it could only attend to 50 of those schools. An estimated R166 million will be needed to fix schools damaged by the storms. | IOL
