NICK BARNETT CHESS

PUZZLE BY A Keirans

THE U.S. CHESS Championship began as a challenge match in 1845 and fell under the auspices of the U.S. Chess Federation in 1936. It was held in many different venues until 2009, when the Saint Louis Chess Club in St. Louis started hosting the annual event.

The 2021 tournament started on the 5th October and will end on the 19th and features 12 of the strongest chess players in America. The prizes include: $194,000 in prize money, qualification into the World Championship cycle, and the title of 2021 U.S. Champion.

Fabiano Caruana, the world No2, and Wesley So, the reigning champion, are the favourites. Their opponents include two Cuban exiles, three juniors, and the US team stalwarts Sam Shankland and Robson.
