NEIL HAYWARD BRIDGE

Recommended Line: You are faced with many challenges. You have a heart loser, but you cannot afford two. You also have a spade blockage. You need to find the ♥A on your right, and a 3-3 break (unless East holds A-J doubleton). In addition, you need to reach the established ♥T and the ♠Q, once those cards have become good (if everything goes according to plan). To achieve all of these objectives, win the first club, and lead the ♦Q to the ♦A. Then lead a heart towards hand. East ducks. You now lead the ♦J to the ♦K, followed by a second heart towards hand. Let’s say East ducks again. You win in hand. Concede a heart, trusting they are breaking 3-3. Win the club return, unblock the ♠A and ♠K, cash the ♦T, and lead the ♦4 to the ♦5. You are in dummy to cash the ♠Q and the ♥T. You have your twelve tricks: three in spades, three in hearts, four in diamonds, and two in clubs. Some might say you were lucky. But, on this occasion, it took great skill to exploit the luck that was there, in the cards.
