WITH the right equipment, you can climb to new heights. Heading out to a local trail, or even a summit, may be one of the most rewarding things to do.

The fresh air and scenic views create the perfect atmosphere to explore and bond with your loved ones.

However, without proper gear, your adventure may lead to fatigue, frustration, and an early end to the expedition. As an avid hiker, I’ve learnt that hiking gear and essential packing can make or break a day out in nature.

Insider spoke to athleisure designer Monica Ebert and she shared advice for hikers.

Ebert says assigning a backpack permanently to your hiking “equipment” makes it far easier to be spontaneous about your outdoor adventures.

“Keep your bag packed and ready at the door so that when the moment presents itself you’re ready to enjoy the beautiful outdoors,” she said.

Here are her other tips:

1. Morning is best

Start your hike early in the morning, when the sun is not at its strongest and the breeze is cool.

2. Wear a cap and sunscreen

In the event that your adventure will stretch for the full day, take sunscreen along for regular reapplication.

3. Safety first

If you’re walking in the late afternoon, pack a torch just in case you’re delayed in your return. Take along a basic medical aid kit for the hike if your adventure is more strenuous. Better to be safe than sorry, even if it is just to deal with a blister.

4. Mask up

There are likely to be places where you pass someone on the path. Take a neck warmer for neck protection from the sun and a quick face protector from passers-by.

5. Wear appropriate shoes

There’s nothing more important than a good pair of walking shoes and socks. Don’t mess around when it comes to keeping feet comfortable.
